How to subtract cells with previous embedded formulas

I am trying to subtract two totals in the same column. One of the totals is a result of a SUM formula. I think I need an IF formula, but don’t know how to build one.

Here is a layout in cell reference language:

D6= $3000

D8= 627.55 as a result of an embedded formula that is =SUM(D10:D21)

D22 needs to equal the difference between 3000-627.55 which is 2372.55

The easy formula of =D6-D8 does not work because of the previous, embedded formula in D8.

Does anyone have a formula for this issue? Can I make this question any clearer?

Thanks in advance!
