I would never consider myself a guru as there are so many ways of doing things in Excel that I am always learning and finding better ways to code VBA or write formulae. It also depends on how you use Excel as it can be very job specific, for me I use mostly VBA. But I guess understanding the following to a competent level would be a good start.

    1. VBA
    2. VLOOKUP/HLOOKUP
    3. Array Formulae
    4. Pivot Tables
    5. OFFSET/FIND/MATCH
    6. SUMIF & Nested SUMIF
    7. SUMPRODUCT
    8. Nested Formulae
    9. LEFT/RIGHT/MID
    10. SUBTOTAL

You will see I have listed more than ten items as I have put related items together. The list is not in any specific order. I have the best way to increase knowledge and experience is through project working, which I have done for the last seven years or so – it just means I have not be confined to a particular business type/data groups.

I hope you found that useful?

Andy – Don’t under estimate your abilities! But yes, a very useful list, and I agree, totally depends on the job.
